A rare occurrence now in the UK is the promise of a scorching summer but predictions on the weather front have again pointed to a hot summer for us all. Admittedly there have been signs and an indication of more hot weather to come after experiencing higher than normal temperatures over the last month or so.

One thing that we Britons have a habit of doing is not applying enough skin protection when venturing out into hot weather on the rare days that temperatures soar.

If you are out between 11am and 3:30pm in the midday sun, it really is advised to apply a strong sun barrier cream to avoid potentially dangerous exposure to high UV rays that not only can give you uncomfortable burns but are linked to skin cancer and other damaging conditions.

Only taking a few moments to protect you and your family, applying a high factor sun cream and then covering your most vulnerable areas with light clothing are the two most important things to consider.

In really hot conditions as the temperature rises into the late 20’s and into the 30’s, government health officials recommend staying in the shade to limit the risk of dangerous exposure to harmful rays.

It basically involves removing the old dead skin cells on the outer layer of skin. Exfoliating unclogs the pores, keeps skin clean and helps reduce acne breakouts.

Exfoliating can be done in a number of ways: Mechanical which means scrubbing the skin with an abrasive such as a cloth or salt crystals; Chemical exfoliants such as citric acid which help to break down the enzymes holding old skin cells together. This method is especially recommended for people with acne. And exfoliating can also be done while removing hair: waxing plucks hairs out and removes the top layer of skin; with chemical hair removal products although these can be very aggressive, and wet shaving which removes dead cells, especially with use of good shaving gels and foams.

Exfoliation is not just a “girl thing”. It’s important for men to exfoliate their faces as this exposes the hair follicles giving a better shave.

Be careful not to over-exfoliate. This can leave skin dry and irritated, and dry skin can lead to wrinkles developing.

There are claims that tanning studios provide safe tanning, this is rubbish! False radiation has all the same dangers natural sun light. Plus, the majority of sun beds give off amounts of UVB & UVA radiation that are a lot higher than what the sun give off. Even though some sun beds only give UVA radiation off in an attempt to lessen the risk of getting sunburn. It is a known fact that UVA rays contribute directly to skin cancer and causes premature aging, therefore, tanning studios are not safe in any way.

There is not a safe way to get a tan. A sun tan is the skin’s way of responding to an injury. Tanning happens when the sun’s Ultra Violet rays infiltrate the skin. This then causes the skin to generate additional pigment in reaction to the injury. Persistent exposure to the sun also speeds up the aging process and amplifies the risk of developing skin cancer. So please remember that obtaining a tan to try and make yourself look better is self defeating.

Sun protection is an imperative factor when it comes to exposing your skin in daylight.

You should apply sunscreen approximately every two hours. However, if you are swimming or you sweat a lot, you should apply it more regularly. Even sunscreen that says it is water proof loses its efficiency when it is exposed to water so you must keep re-applying.
