Why is exfoliation important?

Exfoliation is really important to the health of your skin. It basically involves removing the old dead skin cells on the outer layer of skin. Exfoliating unclogs the pores, keeps skin clean and helps reduce acne breakouts.

Exfoliating can be done in a number of ways: Mechanical which means scrubbing the skin with an abrasive such as a cloth or salt crystals; Chemical exfoliants such as citric acid which help to break down the enzymes holding old skin cells together. This method is especially recommended for people with acne. And exfoliating can also be done while removing hair: waxing plucks hairs out and removes the top layer of skin; with chemical hair removal products although these can be very aggressive, and wet shaving which removes dead cells, especially with use of good shaving gels and foams.

Exfoliation is not just a “girl thing”. It’s important for men to exfoliate their faces as this exposes the hair follicles giving a better shave.

Be careful not to over-exfoliate. This can leave skin dry and irritated, and dry skin can lead to wrinkles developing.
